1. I may not have heard you correctly (seeks confirmation).
Example:
WOT? Libby’s wen’ close? How can? Dass da bes’ manapua!

2. I’m offended by what you said/did (initiates correction or confrontation).
Example:
WOT? My cookin’ not good enuff fo’ you, girl? Shoots, tomorrow you go cook.

3. What are you looking at? What did you mean by that? (a retort in response to perceived insult or offense)
Example:
Young man: WOT?
Female companion: Babe, what’s up? You don’t even know dat guy.
Young man: You neva see? He wen’ give me one look!

WOT?
1. Depending on inflection and tone, could lead to the throwing of hands.
2. Deadliest word to utter aloud in Hawaiʻi, unless you like confrontation.
3. Often misunderstood as intending for confrontation but simply asking for someone to repeat themselves because of bad hearing, low audible tone, or other noise barring from hearing another person clearly.
Examples:
a. Wot? You like cracks?
b. Wot?!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
c. Wot? I look like I Siri? Why you give me stink eye?
d. Wot? I no can hear.
